This is Kathy's husband Randy posting. This morning our friend Chris from church took us to the airport. We got into Chicago around 9:30 AM and went right to CTCA. Kathy had some preliminary tests and then we met with the doctor. We discussed the side effects from the previous treatment and the doctor felt that these were likely a result of the steroids used to manage the chemo. Also, Kathy had developed some redness since the treatment and the doctor said that this was an encourgaing sign that the cancer had responded to the previous treatment.
Some more good news: Since we were here last, they tested some tissue from Kathy's surgery and the cancer is also responsive to another drug called erbitux. This gives us yet another weapon in this battle. Also, the doctor is recommending radiation treatment but we are hoping that this can be arranged in the CTCA facility in Philadelphia. This will be a 4 to 5 week hospitalization for the radiation treatment.
As I write this, Kathy is in the infusion center receiving her first treatment with erbitux. The treatment will last 2 hours and since this is the first time for this drug, she will be watched for any allergic reaction or adverse side effects. The erbitux treatment will be followed by 1 hour of taxotere and then we will go and check into the hotel.
Tomorrow, Kathy starts treatment in the morning with carboplatin and taxotere, another 3 hour treatment. On Saturday, she will receive a 1 hour treatment of just taxotere.
While we were getting ready for the chemo treatment, we found out that our daughter Dianne is in the emergency room at Suburban General back home. Earlier she had cut herself at work and developed an infection. Her infection has not been responding to the anti-bitotics and she is supposed to fly out to California on Sunday.
