Friday's Treatment
March 10, 2006
This is Randy posting again. Today has been very busy at CTCA. There are a lot of patients being treated today. Kathy is still in the Infusion Center getting her chemo. She started today at 10:30 AM and the treatment will last until around 3 PM. Today she is receiving taxotere and carboplatin.
This morning, the ND stopped by and we discussed side effects with her. She gave Kathy some supplements that should help with the muscle cramps and the "chemo-brain". She also instructed Kathy to start taking multi-vitamins. The nutritionist stopped by immediately after the ND and Kathy talked about her diet with her. Kathy will need to increase her protein by using protein powder mix and also adding soymilk to her usual breakfast of fruit and oatmeal. Other suggestions included adding nuts to the oatmeal. For lunch she will need to add meat to her salad. She is supposed to have an afternoon snack of crackers with peanut butter or almond butter and for her evening meal she needs to make sure that she has a serving of meat. The nutritionist suggested setting up a schedule and having someone (me) make sure that she gets enough protein.
For those of you wondering about our daughter Dianne, she was admitted to the hospital for treatment of her infection. I just received word while writing this that she has been discharged and is back home again. I spoke with her and she is feeling much better.
Tomorrow we will check out of the hotel and Kathy will start her treatment at 9:10 AM. It will be the shortest of the treatments this time, only lasting about an hour. After that we will eat lunch and head for the airport to catch an afternoon flight back home. Our friend Ray from church will be picking us up in Philadelphia.

Hi Kathy & Randy,
Thanks for posting on the blog and keeping us up to date.
Hope this treatment is easier on you than the last one, Kathy.
Protein Powder can be yummy when you make a smoothie with it...frozen fruit (I like strawberries), ice, vanilla, sugar or equal, nonfat milk powder, and protein powder. If you like Starbucks type stuff, make the shake with instant coffee, milk powder, cocoa if you like, protein powder and the ice.
Take care, and thinking of you.

Hi Kathy and Randy,
It's amazing to see how you guys are managing all of this and your family. It is a real inspiration.
My favorite protein snack is almonds, so I'll bet that almond butter will be yummy. Look for macadamia butter as well.
Much love,
Sharon

Hi. Checked your blog a couple of times and have not seen any postings. Hope that means that you are doing well!!
Here is something I hope will make you smile.
A young woman went to her doctor complaining of pain.
"Where are you hurting?" asked the doctor.
"You have to help me, I hurt all over", said the woman.
"What do you mean, all over?" asked the doctor, "be a little more specific."
The woman touched her right knee with her index finger and yelled, "Ow, that hurts."
Then she touched her left cheek and again yelled, "Ouch! That hurts, too."
Then she touched her right earlobe, "Ow, even THAT hurts", she cried.
The doctor checked her thoughtfully for a moment and told her his diagnosis, "You have a broken finger."
Thinking of you, Cindy(CSB on TUG)
